LASANAA is an alternative art space with the credo of bringing people together, and allow learning through idea exchange. LASANAA provides an opportunity for national and international artists to explore art forms beyond the conventional and traditional, in order to arrive at a unique individual expression. LASANAA’s main objective is to bring about change in society – on social, cultural and political levels, through its artivism (art + activism).
LASANAA is a non-profit art organization established in 2007 for the promotion of contemporary Nepali art. A brainchild of interdisciplinary artist and art-activist Ashmina Ranjit, LASANAA was founded with the intention of developing conceptual art in Nepal through critical thinking to ultimately address societal issues.
Prior to the establishment of LASANAA, conceptually driven art and post-modern ideologies were minorities in the Nepali art scene; the field was dominated by the long-established traditional art practices and the modern scene, which had planted a strong footing in Nepal since the late 20th century. Prior to the 20th century, art reflected mostly religion and culture as a medium of personal expression; socio-political issues were subjects rarely discussed. Soon after its founding, LASANAA played an integral part in involving the community in the art-making process. LASANAA, along with a few prominent contemporary artists took up the challenge to prove otherwise. the established idea Art is not only an entity for the upper classes of society; it is for everyone without discrimination.
